This and vol. 6 of Yu-Gi-Oh feature one of my favorite stories in the series. Monster World is a much more interesting story than the usual, mainly due to the fact that it’s not only the first battle between Yami Bakura, but also takes place in an RPG rather than playing yet another game of Duel Monsters. The highlight, however, is the debuts of both Ryou Bakura and his mysterious dark counterpart, which are both much more intriguing than their anime halves.
Ryou Bakura alone is a more important character than his anime self. For example, during future duels in the events of Yu-Gi-Oh Duelist he can be seen cheering Yugi or Jonouchi on, whereas in the anime he’s non-existant. Another scene near the start of Battle City shows him visitng Yugi in a hospital, yet in the anime he’s nowhere to be found. As you can see, he doesn’t have much screen time in the anime version. When he does, it’s usually Yami Bakura pretending to be him, so even though we don’t really know all that much. In the anime, the biggest thing we find out about him is that he apparently likes food a lot(there are a few episodes where we see him stuffing his face). In the manga, he actually has a personality. He’s an excellent cook, likes RPGS, and is interested in the occult. We also find out that he constantly is there to support his friends, and would even give his life to help them. A lot more than what we learn in the anime version.
Yami Bakura too, is a bit different. In the anime, he’s more along the lines of, “I’m evil and will kill you all, WHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!” In the manga, he’s much more manipulative for starters. He also is far more menacing and enigmatic until the final story arc, as well as that he usually stalks his prey, in fact, he seems to at points feel more like a cobra ready to strike. His motive is still clear: to gather the Millenium Items, but his true allegiance is far less clear. Some times he attacks Yugi and the group and tries to destroy them(this one’s an example), yet other times, he actually aids the group, leaving them wondering the truth about him and at times convincing them that he may really be an ally… so much that he even has Ryou willingly put the Millenium Ring on.
Here’s to the start of a great character.
